Nell Stephenson from Paleoista.com joined us today to discuss some great ideas surrounding The Paleo Diet. She’s the author of The Paleo Diet Cookbook as well as Paleoista: Gain Energy, Get Lean, and Feel Fabulous with the Diet You Were Born to Eat.

The paleo diet makes a lot of sense to me. Eating more whole and fresh foods that the body can actually recognize as food just makes logical sense. Many people make a big stink about the paleo diet and think that modern day paleo advocates are attempting to completely mimic the diet that our early ancestors had.

After speaking with Nell Stephenson as well as Dr. Loren Cordain, it’s evident that that is NOT what paleo is all about. Sure it would be much healthier if we could all eat wild food growing out in the wilderness and eat wild game while hunting with no shoes on. There’s no doubt about the fact that being grounded to the earth and breathing clean air in the sunshine is most optimal.

But paleo advocates are simply saying, “hey let’s try to simply get a little bit closer to that kind of life and see how it affects our health.” Cavemen didn’t expose themselves to car exhaust, electromagnetic radiation or all the stresses of modern life.

There were no cell phones and computers where people sat for hours at a time like we do today.

There’s no way we can completely get back to that in our modern industrial world. But what we can do are some small things starting with our diet, that’ll help us recreate a healthier life for ourselves.

Daniel Vitalis calls it rewilding and I like that term.

Nell Stephenson was so much fun to have on. She’s an author, health coach and motivator and even a triathlete. We talked about how to structure the paleo eating style around things like endurance competitions.

The paleo diet is great because it can be a nice foundation which can be tailored for any condition, even multiple sclerosis.

We have a lot of people in our community who are “recovering vegans” like Nell was or even “recovering raw foodists”. For me, I’ve found the paleo diet a great adjunct to my high raw diet. I still like to eat fermented foods, superfoods, herbal teas, green smoothies, as well as eating a low sugar and low carbohydrate diet with no processed foods.

Allowing yourself to make the paleo diet work for you is what’s key. It doesn’t matter if you like to eat eggs, organ meats or lots of raw super foods, you can still make your life alot healthier by including small amounts (or large amounts) of animal products.

Nell Stephenson was gracious enough to join our show today even though we had some technical issues that we were struggling with but we made it through!

Thanks Nell! 🙂
