If you are injured or have any body alignment issues rolfing could be for you. Rolfing can help with sore backs, chronic pain, stifness or tightness a lack of mobility and soreness.
What is rolfing you say?
Good question. Rolfing falls somewhere in between deep tissue massage, and chiropractic work. Deep tissue massage works more on the muscles and chiropractic work (primarily and feel free to correct me on this) focuses more on the structural alignment through the manipulation of the bones and joints of the body.
Rolfing achieves this through the manual stimulation of the fascia of the tissues. Because it’s based on how gravity pulls down our bodies the rolfing treatment can vary significantly for each person.
According to promonents of rolfing, gravity actually pulls certain parts of our bodies down that have been injured or are out of alignment. As a result of this misalignment, energy can not flow through the body effectively. Because of this hormone levels can change, energy levels can change and this affects your life in very significant ways.
“One of the easiest ways to free the spirit is to free the bindings of the body.” – Dr. Ida Rolf
Think of a glass that’s filled with lots of medium sized pebbles the size of coins. When you fill the glass up you’ll see many parts of the glass in between these marbles or rocks. If you were able to remove one of the rocks at the very bottom of the glass every rock above it would shift and compensate for the rock that you just pulled out.
The body works very similarly because of gravity. When one system, organ or area of the body is injured it can effect many other symptoms of your body.
For example we talked during the show about how the body works somewhat like a slinky. If you bite is off even by the width of a piece of paper, it can affect your shoulders, your hips, knees and ankles.
Suddenly you’re compensating all over your body because of one tiny area of the body that’s not aligned properly
This becomes significantly interesting if you sit at a desk all day, if you have old sports injuries like I do and you have never had rolfing to help realign the entire body. You should see some of the before and after pictures on rolfing from google images. People use it for bad lower backs, shoulder problems, scoliosis and even kyphosis.
What I find particularly interesting is the relationship between rolfing and proper energy flow in the body. We know that we are all energy and when the body is properly aligned energy (from food, the earth or even other people) can flow in and out rather seamlessly.
This means you can do your spiritual practices much better too like prayer and meditation. It also will help you in your sports. Having a body that flows and works like a child is the goal right?
Rolfing can help you get there. At least I think it can. I’ve never had a rolfing experience but I plan to after this show with Greg Knight.
We hope you enjoyed our interview with Greg Knight as much as we did and if you did would you consider clicking “like” and “share” on this page to let your friends and family know about the work he is doing?
Kate and I would greatly appreciate that! 🙂
